you know why trolls bother us? because we are social animals and no one wants to be excluded from the pack. when someone attacks our character, accomplishments or worth, they are deeming us unworthy to be part of the group. it's basic, animal behavior that no amount of rationalization will overcome. it's same thing with the N word. why can some people say it and others can't? because when you're part of the group and say it, it's inclusive. when you're outside of the group and say it, its divisive. Go ahead and call your friends Nerds, you're stating that they're part of the pack.

i dreamed that someone i knew had surgery where his perfect circles were cut around each eye in order to rotate the eyelids to give an alien or cat like appearance. You could still see the scars and his eyes were still disoriented, unable to focus or look straight, one pupil larger than the other.

Paranoid Park Before "Milk," Gus Van Sant set out upon another of his small meditations on youth and death and came away with this handsome, attentive and incidentally profound film. The technique is unsurpassed, the acting is sure, and Portland looks absolutely gorgeous.

Wendy and Lucy Another made-in-Portland story about a young person on the edge. But writer Jon Raymond and director Kelly Reichardt have something small and incidental in mind. Michelle Williams' amazing performance strikes deep emotional chords with offhanded poignancy and sureness.

Persona 3

starting playing Persona 3 since Persona 4 is getting such high reviews. don't know that the theme of Persona 4 is, but a high school simulator is not my idea of a good time. Half of the game involves maintaining social relationships in school in order to strengthen the social links of the different Tarot suits corresponding to each character. e.g. participate in the student council more and the Emperor suit increases giving you more experience when creating "Persona" of that suit. + having played Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne already, i found that the combat system (mythology + characters) was basically the same.
I'm about 8 hours into the game (70 hours of game play?) and i still don't know why the characters seemingly shoot themselves in the head to call the Personas.

so mostly i listen to the ign games podcast. i tend to listen to all of them even though i don't have all the platforms. Secondly, I'll listen to indie spinner rack for comics related stuff. I used to listen to all around comics, comic geek speak, fanboy radio, wait wait don't tell me and this week in science. Every once in a while, i still listen to music like my new favorite song.

Mike Russel (movie reviews) , Aaron Duran (comics news) and Dave Walker (b movies) are regular guests + there's a few interviews with Katie Sackhoff. How geek focused is the show? apparently, this DS party drawing game, LOL will only be available to purchase over the internet. (5/30). One person hosts the game, thinks of a drawing challenge, and gives everyone so much time to come up with an answer, then everyone votes. It's multiplayer only.

I was pretty excited to go this year. It was only half a year since the last one since APE had moved the fall, Stumptown moved to the spring and it seemed like allot of the talent that would have been at APE this time of year was instead going to be here. I started with Dave Roman's panel on Saturday, which was basically self promotion. he talked about how he got into comics from cartoon cross promotion (G.I. Joe vs Transformers). I met Mike there and walked around. The show was bigger than ever and so less intimate. i waited a while for Julia Wertz to get back to her table as she was off at some panel. When i left, i realized that i hadn't seen Derek Kirk Kim or Gene Yang.
Went to the art battle that night. Mike Russel didn't host, not as much fun. The teams were web comics vs print. The teams included the usual cadre from pants press on one side and Carla Speed McNeil and I'm not sure who else on the print side. It seems like allot of people left at one point for some reason.
i wasn't going to go Sunday, but i woke up with a slight headache and generally felt useless, so i look at the schedule and decided to go to the webcomicsworkshop panel which was pretty informative. The next panel was Mike Russel talking about making money from web comics. Very entertaining . He recommend a book called How to Make Webcomics. The most interesting point was that web comics, unlike print comics, give the content away for free and are more like tv. They build a loyal following and make money from the auxiliary stuff, ad placement, books, t-shirts etc. And really, more to the point, are more like a band. You listen for free on the radio and they make money going on tour (appearing at conventions). I traded t-shirts with Liz Baille and Graham Annable and found someone in town that will take my shirts on consignment.

I'm back from the comic con. Saw John Favaru walking around but didn't take his picture because he was with his kids. Also saw Brian Posen, Elvira, Jane Weiden, Lou Fergino. Got Ray Harryhausen's autograph. Made an exquisite corpse book by taking a band saw to a sketchbook. Got lots of drawings for it but need more. i'll take it to stumptown. should have gotten more indy artist, they have a sense of humor and get it right away. Shaenon Garrity, Jill Thompson, Mark Wheatly, John Allison, Ben Edlund, Tim Sale, Matt Wagner, Debbie Huey, Phil Foglio and a few more artist. I have to say that Garrity's drawing is my favorite. It's made me an instant fan. We only went for 2 of the 4 days and it wasn't enough to see everything. Kingdom of Loathing had a booth, but they had closed up before i could get anything. It turns out that Kinkos operates a shipping center from the lobby of the convention. Had i known that before, i would have bought allot more stuff. I did buy one page of Simon Bisley art from FAKK 2 and some indy comics. I wish i would have found a t-shirt to buy. I went to one panel, because to me, it's part of the con experience. I picked on one kid's comics but i'm afraid it wasn't that interesting. about 1/3 of the hour was taken up by people just saying what the first comics they read were. i did get some tips on some titles to check out. i'll have to see how they pan out. WB was hading out huge Smallville bags. I heard that someone had made one into a dress. I wish i had seen it. i'll have to see if i can find a picture.
Thanks to Ben for arranging all of this, i probably wouldn't have gone otherwise.

i read King Dork, or rather i listened to the audio book. (Library) I liked the book but was a little disappointed by the ending since it seemed to come out of nowhere, but i might have been a little distracted as i listened to it at work. If i was actually reading it, i might have gone back over certain passages. The book is about a high school sophomore with a band and his battle with the "normals" and the cult of Catcher in the Rye. Its kinda like if John Hughes made the movie version of Freaks and Geeks except with the protagonist having some success. I could see the book being a MTV production, i totally seems like something they would make + it was written by the lead singer of the Mr T experience so there's a built in music hook.

Had lunch at the Press Club Sunday (Clinton and 26th, next doot to Green Noise Records). They have good crepes and an excellent selection of magazines to browse through you can also buy. I like the artist curently showing there, Ilya Zlotnikov.
